Credit references agencies
are companies that store financial information on almost every adult
in the UK. This information is available to each individual if they
require it. These credit agencies don’t make decisions about
whether credit is given, they just supply information and lenders
make their decision about whether credit is given or not.
Public information consists
of information in the electoral register, county court information
and bankruptcies. You should ensure that you are on the electoral
register in order to obtain credit for anything in the future.
Credit reference agencies store credit information on behalf of
lenders. Lenders share this information. This means that lenders
can find out if you have repaid loans in the past. So should you
apply for a new loan or credit, it helps your application if you
have fully repaid any debts you’ve had in the past, otherwise
you may find it more difficult to obtain a loan.
Should you wish to obtain a copy of your credit report, you can
do so by contacting credit reference agencies, such as Equifax,
Experian or Callcredit. You are required to pay a fee of £2
for your report.
Similarly, if you are worried that someone has stolen your identity
or that your report may be incorrect, you should obtain a copy of
your report straight away. Credit reference agencies can rectify
genuine mistakes on your report.
